Engineering Machinery Alterations
Improving and upgrading machinery is critically important, but asset availability time is also clearly impacted during these service periods. For Navy ships, this lost service time grows exponentially because of the sheer numbers of equipment, and the complicated planning that is part of the process.
CHALLENGE:
Alteration times must be planned very carefully and include not only ensuring ship availability, but also ensuring all of the necessary estimating, material, logistics, and administrative support is in place. Missing a planned alteration or not having the necessary material or tools to complete the effort can increase costs and impact readiness.
SOLUTION:
McKean’s waterfront support personnel have become part of the solution. We provide local technical expertise to assist in installations, ship checks, and prototype preparations for machinery alterations at several homeports. We are also responsible for the program management and logistics associated with this equipment.
SUCCESS:
Under our watch, the number of completed installations has doubled. And the costs? Those have dropped 35%. Improved planning, estimating and logistic documentation support are the focus of our MACHALT team.
