Improving Shipboard IT Security

McKean is able to deploy support teams that include both deep shipboard operational understanding and robust IT capabilities. That allows us to provide an integrated perspective to IT environments that support Fleet operations. Our tasking with the Coast Guard National Security Cutter 1 (NCS1) is one example of this.

CHALLENGE:

While NCS1 design and construction was underway, the Coast Guard tasked McKean to review the Information Assurance (IA) characteristics of the Hull, Mechanical & Electrical (HM&E) network. Vulnerabilities in the HM&E network could clearly impact mission capability and maneuverability, but also could result in equipment damage and/or personnel injury, given the functions of these critical systems.

SOLUTION:

McKean IA engineering performed an architectural and network review, including a physical ship check, and developed recommendations to secure the HM&E network. Our background and understanding of the Department of the Navy’s initiative with Platform IT (PIT) systems, and the similarity of the HM&E environment to the Navy PIT definitions, meant that McKean was able to guide US Coast Guard in creating their own PIT system definition and process.

SUCCESS:

The USCG achieved an ATO for the HM&E network within 6 months of our effort.
